Lins and Matt’s Story

Design Process 1 to 5

Turning a brand new white space into something really characterful, modern and interesting

Details

Lins and Matt are two of the most hardworking people I know. They are both highly intelligent, deeply funny, with a love of Maths, Physics and Engineering.

They came to me after they’d completed a fabulous extension onto the back of their midcentury house to create a kitchen, sitting room and dining room. They asked for my help turning this brand-new white space into something much more characterful. Something which represented them and their interests and heritage.

We started by creating a Design Analysis, and then used this to help find their unique style. I created a digital inspiration board; a design strategy; mood words; a full moodboard; a colour palette; sketches of their walls to copy and colour; a layout and lighting plan; and a sourcing list. The whole process took a couple of weeks and they’re now in the finishing stages of implementation. I’m so excited for them.

Here’s what Lins had to say:

Not just another mood board:

Any interior designer can create a mood board of current trends and tell you where to source things, but The House Editor is not one of those.

Our new open plan kitchen and living space was in danger of never being 'finished'; the furniture no longer fit; the walls were painted off white 'just for now'; and we had no idea how to dress the huge bifold doors...

Annie spent time with my husband and me to understand us, to ask the obvious questions, such as what colours we liked, and the not so obvious ones about our jobs, our travels, our personalities.

She took all the ideas that we didn't know were inside us and turned them into a recipe for a home that we'd never have been able to create ourselves.

My husband and I were surprised to find that we liked the same things! We have never agreed on home decor ever.

And there was an unexpected consequence - Annie has given me confidence to add some wonderful greens to my otherwise exclusively navy and white wardrobe, and my husband bought himself an orange polo shirt!

Annie, thank you so much for our classy, colourful home filled with things that say, 'We live here'.
